| Periodontal disease is a chronic infection of the gum tissue, ligaments and bone that surround the teeth. This infection is caused by the presence of a bacterial film that forms on the teeth and gums called plaque. The disease is cyclical in nature, having periods of destructive activity and periods of inactivity or remission. Each case is looked at individually to determine what other influences, such as each person's host resistance or level of stress, are involved. Once periodontal disease is detected as being present in a patient's mouth, our goal is to provide information to the patient and the clinical therapy necessary to eliminate the active infection, and help keep the disease in an inactive or controlled state. |
